Long-serving Somali Parliament speaker Mohamed Sheik Osman Jawari faces impeachment from the house he heads. 94 Federal MP’s accusing speaker Jowari of several accounts of wrongdoing signed a motion against the attorney.
The MP’s who signed the impeachment motion against him had submitted their case to the deputy speaker of Somalia’s lower house Abdiweli Ibrahim Mudeey this morning accusing the veteran Somali politician on accounts that include on his reluctance in the constitutional review process.
The MP’s also decried what they claimed is Jowari’s attempt to quash political dissent.
The 73-year-old speaker who remained in power since the adoption of the current Somali constitution was named the chairman of the committee of specialists tasked with formulating Somalia’s draft constitution in 2012.
Jowari also enjoyed becoming the first speaker of a Somali Parliament that was not transitional since the toppling of the Siyad Bare regime in 1991.
The impeachment motion comes only two days into a motion that saw Somalia’s lower house MP’s ban the Dubai Ports operator over the Berbera port spat, a move that angered Somalia’s northerners.
Another account stated in the latter submitted to the Deputy Speaker was the speaker’s inability to complete the parliamentary committee- one such committee was the parliamentary service commission.
