Former Somalia president Sheikh Shariif Sheekh Axmad has announced his bid for the presidency of Somalia in the country’s upcoming elections.

Shariif was the first president of the federal state of Somallia formed after the collapse of the Transitional Federal government formed in 2004 and came to power following the UN sponsored talks in Djibouti to end the war between the Islamic Courts Union which Shariif was part of and the TFG backed by Ethiopia.

Sheekh Shariif had earlier hinted at the possibility of running for office in the 2020 election but hadn’t made the commitment up to this point.

Shariif justified his bid describing it as a result of repeated requests from the people of Somalia urging him to run for office and his concern over the worrying state of the federal government stating that the Somali people had seen and were satisfied with his governance.
